Hi Gang,

Just bought a 2005 polaris sm 800 efi and was wondering what octane gas you guys are running? The mechanic suggested highest octane possible.

Any thoughts?

Thanks Musky.

I almost always try to remember to use the highest octane possible, but go by what your owners manual says,if you have one.

Use what octane you like, won't make a damn bit of diff unless you can change the timing on your machine. Avoid anything with high ethanol content.

Don't waste your money on Higher octane fuel. You won't gain anything from running it and some engines make less power on higher octane. Unless it has higher compression(11.5:1 or higher) you are throwing your money away.

efi!! sparky is right running any clean gas in your 800 will work , the higher the octane the longer the burn (more even)takes longer to burn but no hot spots ,long story short your computer will adjust to air fuel mixture and adjust with the o2 senser

I think all atv's are what is called an open loop system and don't utilize a O2 sensor like automobiles.

Thanks for gas tips guys..sounds like 91 oct is a waste of dough. Anyone use regularily use stabilizer in gas?

Also, what mileage-gallon/litre should I expect with the 2005 800 efi sportsman?

Your sportsman will have a small tank, not sure the exact miles you should get, but it is considerably less litres than most bikes.

4.75 gallons or 18.0 litres of fuel for the 800 2005 sportsman. should be plenty of fuel for most rides, fuel economy depends what your doing . wildhigh

your tank is 14 liter depending on how you ride 35 to 70 miles is what to expect. I always carry extra fuel. the touring model has a lot larger tank.

Gotta disagree here fella,Hillbilly and I went from his place to maynooth and he was almost out of gas and I only put 6 bucks in mine, and then we headed to whitney from Maynooth and by the we got there he was empty again and I put in 10 bucks, and by the time we got back to his place he was on fumes,I had half a tank.

Why not do what the owners manual says.
